Stay in Ao Nang if the Phi Phi day trip is the reason you are in Krabi. Almost every tour collects from Ao Nang hotels for free, Nopparat Thara pier is about 5 to 8 minutes away by road, and you can walk to dinner. Nopparat Thara, at the north end of Ao Nang, is quieter and even closer to the pier. For a resort stay, Klong Muang is about 15 minutes out, but check your tour’s pickup time and surcharge. Krabi Town is the budget base and the nearest to the airport and to the Klong Jilad ferry, at the price of an early pickup. Railay is beautiful but has no road, so you join tours by boat, and a few tours do not stop there at all.

At Nopparat Thara pier, Guide Kratae’s sunset tour and Sea Eagle’s private charter board; GR Rungtawan’s day trip leaves straight from Ao Nang Beach. Sea Eagle, Krabi Ezy Trails and Srisawat send their boats to Railay East floating pier for Railay guests. Andaman Wave Master and Seatran Discovery run the ferries from Klong Jilad in Krabi Town.
Ao Nang suits most visitors. GR Rungtawan, Sea Eagle, Krabi Ezy Trails, Guide Kratae and Krabi Blue Sky all collect here at no charge, the morning drive to the pier is short, and the beach road has plenty of restaurants. The trade-off is that it is busy, and the cheaper hotels are set back from the sand.
Aonang Silver Orchid Resort (mid-range, 8.5 from 2,192 Booking.com reviews) has an outdoor pool and free parking, 0.9 miles from Ao Nang Beach, at $91 a night for 15–17 January. Sea Seeker Krabi Resort (mid-range, 8.5 from 2,576) is 850 yards from the beach at $203; the minimum check-in age is 18. “Ao Nang” on a voucher can mean a pier or the beach. GR Rungtawan’s Phi Phi Speedboat Tour with Lunch checks guests in at its office next to Burger King and leaves from Ao Nang Beach; most others leave from Nopparat Thara pier. With pickup included it makes little difference to you, but it matters if you plan to walk.
The Nopparat Thara end of Ao Nang is quieter, with a long beach and fewer restaurants. It has the shortest run to the pier, and early-bird pickups from about 05:50 are easier when the van has only a couple of minutes to drive.
Baan Thara Guesthouse (budget, 9.0 from 554 reviews) has air-conditioned rooms and a tour desk, a 12-minute walk from Nopparat Thara Beach and about 2 minutes by road from the pier, at $46 a night; there is no pool. Aonang Viva Resort (mid-range, 8.2 from 2,006) has a pool and free parking 650 yards from Nopparat Thara Beach, about 5 minutes from the pier, at $108. See all stays near Nopparat Thara.
Klong Muang is a strip of beach resorts north-west of Ao Nang, about 15 minutes from the pier by road. Many tours collect here free, including GR Rungtawan’s and the early bird from 05:50, but some charge: Oh-Hoo adds THB 100 per person round trip from Klong Muang or Tub Kaek. Tubkaek is farther again, and we did not verify a hotel there. Expect a quiet evening; there is little to walk to.
Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort (luxury, 9.2 from 1,942) is beachfront with two pools and free parking, at $639 a night with breakfast in the rate shown. VARANA Krabi Hotel (upper, 8.9 from 1,182) is a five-minute walk from Koh Kwang Beach at $222; minimum check-in age 18. Krabi Town is cheaper, a few minutes from Klong Jilad ferry pier, and closer to the airport than Ao Nang. For a day trip it means a longer morning: Nopparat Thara pier is about 28 km by road, so plan on about 30 minutes or more in traffic, and an earlier pickup. GR Rungtawan and the sunset tour collect in town free; Sea Eagle does too, except near the airport, the bus terminal and the Old Town. Check that your hotel is not in one of those zones.
Dee Andaman Hotel (budget, 8.3 from 1,894) is 1.6 miles from Klong Jilad pier with free parking, at $69 a night. Krabi Airport is about 30 to 45 minutes by taxi from Ao Nang, and Krabi Town hotels list it at 7.5 to 8 miles. If you land late, a night in town and a Klong Jilad ferry or a town pickup the next morning works well.
Railay has no road. Both resorts we checked say you arrive by boat from Ao Nam Mao pier or Ao Nang Beach, and day tours that serve Railay pick you up at Railay East floating pier after their mainland run. Two tours, Guide Kratae’s sunset trip and the sunrise shark nursery tour, do not stop at Railay at all. Railay Bay Resort & Spa (upper, 8.4 from 3,800) is next to the Railay pier, about 20 minutes by longtail from Ao Nam Mao or Ao Nang, with free parking for your car on the mainland at Ao Nam Mao pier, at $284. A split works well if you have five nights or more. Spend two or three nights in Ao Nang or Nopparat Thara for the day trip, when the short pickup counts, then move to Phi Phi Don or Railay for beach nights. The Ao Nang speedboat calls at Railay on its way to Phi Phi, so Ao Nang, Railay and Phi Phi chain together without backtracking. Day tours from Krabi do not collect on Phi Phi, so put the island at the end, not the middle. Book the tour first, then the room. The Phi Phi tours on this site have free cancellation up to 24 hours before, while the cheapest room rates are often non-refundable. Maya Bay is open again after its annual closure, which runs 1 August to 30 September, so check that your dates fall outside that window if Maya Bay is the point of the trip.
You don’t need a car anywhere except, perhaps, Klong Muang: tours collect from hotels, and the van picks up from the lobby. Give the operator your exact hotel name, because zones differ. Sea Eagle does not collect from Centara Grand Beach Resort, a separate hotel from the Centara Ao Nang Beach above, and some operators ask guests staying up a hill to wait at a hotel on the main road. Keep 400 THB per adult in cash for the national park fee, which is extra on almost every tour.

Ao Nang if the day trip is your main plan; Krabi Town if price matters more. Krabi Town hotels started at $22 a night for 15 to 17 January 2027, but the pier is about 30 minutes away in traffic, so pickups are earlier, and a few tours charge extra. The areas side by side.

Avoid a Krabi Town hotel near the airport, the bus terminal or the Old Town if you want a Sea Eagle tour, as those areas are excluded from its pickup. Don't plan a Phi Phi Don base for Krabi day tours either: they do not collect on the island. Should you split the stay?
